US denies Iran prisoner swap report

THE US has denied reports it had offered Iran a prisoner swap to retrieve former US Marine Amir Hekmati, who has been imprisoned in the Islamic republic since 2011.

IRANIAN media had reported that Hekmati's lawyer asked for his release in return for the freeing of Iranians in the US.

"Those reports are not accurate," State Department spokesman Jeffrey Rathke told a news conference. "The US government has not proposed a prisoner exchange for Mr Hekmati."The purported proposal supposedly came through Swiss intermediaries. The US and Iran have not had official diplomatic relations since 1980.Rathke renewed calls for Hekmati's release and urged Tehran to free two other Americans - Saeed Abedini, a Christian pastor, and Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian - and to help find Robert Levinson, a retired FBI agent who disappeared in Iran in 2007.Relations between traditional foes Washington and Tehran have improved somewhat in recent months and the two countries have had direct exchanges over Iran's nuclear program.Arrested in August 2011, Iranian authorities convicted Hekmati of spying for America's Central Intelligence Agency. He was initially sentenced to death in 2012 but Iran's top court subsequently reduced the penalty to 10 years in prison.

Travellers stranded as snow hits UK

Air and road travellers in the UK have been left stranded by heavy snowfalls. Source: AAP

WILD and wintry weather has swept the UK and stranded travellers with heavy snow covering roads and forcing two airports to close.

MANY motorists simply abandoned their vehicles as drivers became stuck in Sheffield.

One driver tweeted he had been in a queue for more than four hours.Motorists have been advised to check before travelling and, in some parts, avoid journeys unless essential.People travelling from Sheffield to London had to take refuge in a church after their coach became stuck in the snow before leaving the south Yorkshire city, passenger Chloe McIntosh told the BBC."Some people from the houses nearby have come and offered us tea. Then they opened up the church."Liverpool's John Lennon Airport and Leeds Bradford International closed while runways were cleared of snow as a band of wet weather crossed the country from Merseyside and north Wales through the Midlands and Yorkshire.Leek, near the Peak District in Staffordshire, had the worst of the snow with 10cm, the Met Office said, with Cranwell in Lincolnshire also recording 7cm.Four flights into Liverpool from Malta, Berlin and Bucharest were diverted to Manchester Airport, while a fifth from the Isle of Man returned as the Merseyside hub was closed for more than an hour while its runway was cleared.Police warned of hazardous conditions on Friday night, especially in Staffordshire and Cheshire, with several roads made impassable.Snow had been predicted to fall in parts of north Wales, the North West and the Midlands, with a Met Office Level Three amber cold weather alert in place and a yellow warning of snow across a large swathe of the UK.The Pennines and Peak District also had plenty of snow. The snow played havoc with some Friday football matches, including in the West Midlands as West Bromwich Albion lost 3-1 to Manchester City in blizzard conditions. The Met Office had earlier said there was a 90 per cent chance of severe cold, ice or snow in parts of England until New Year's Eve.An area including Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia, the North West, Yorkshire and as far south east as London and Kent is on a separate yellow alert for snow.Christmas night was the coldest night of the year so far, with minus 8.5C recorded at Braemar in Aberdeenshire.Temperatures could also drop as low as minus 10C in some places at the start of next week as cloud and wet weather give way to clearer skies.

Family and friends farewell Tori Johnson

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 23 Desember 2014 | 22.34

TIBETAN monks and sunflowers have accompanied Tori Johnson's coffin on its way from his funeral, a week after the man, hailed a hero, lost his life in a siege in Sydney's city centre.

HUNDREDS of mourners, including survivors of the Lindt Cafe siege and dignitaries, on Tuesday joined Mr Johnson's family at a private church service just a 100 metres from where the 34-year-old cafe manager was shot dead.

"Celebrating Tori's Love, Generosity and Life," read the memorial booklet for the man who was shot as tried to wrestle a gun from Man Haron Monis in the final moments of the 17-hour siege.Tori's father, Ken, read the eulogy at St Stephen's Uniting Church, where NSW Premier Mike Baird, NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione and Governor David Hurley joined mourners.Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore and federal Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull also attended, while Sydneysiders lined Macquarie Street outside to pay their final respects during the hour-long service.Johnson's long-term partner, Thomas Zinn, who read one of five tributes, was the first to leave the service while a white hearse carried Mr Johnson's coffin to a private cremation in Sydney's east.A group of siege survivors, including co-workers, a little later walked from the church to a makeshift memorial near where a sea of flowers had just hours earlier been removed before rain could destroy the tributes. They added their flowers to the hundreds of bouquets that had been placed under a marquee to protect them from the weather.Standing together, they watched, along with Reverend Bill Crews who'd led the service, while funeral staff placed dozens of white roses and sunflowers on a black table. They then embraced each other, while a nearby busker played Silent Night on a guitar. And, passers-by continued to lay their flower tributes as the survivors left.

Future Brisbane skyline revealed

Brisbane are given a glimpse of the city's future skyline with the unveiling of Casino proposals. Source: AAP

RIVAL proponents vying for the right to develop a casino on prime riverfront land in Brisbane have laid their cards on the table.

THE Queensland government's decision to move public service offices to a new site at 1 William Street will free up the existing government precinct between George Street and the Riverside Expressway after 2016.

Enter two giants - incumbent Brisbane casino owner Echo Entertainment and James Packer's Crown Resorts - who are battling it out for the once in a lifetime development opportunity. The pair's rival consortiums on Monday revealed artist impressions of their proposals and both had exceeded the government's expectations, Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said. Both projects would include a casino, hotels, residential accommodation, a pedestrian bridge to South Bank and luxurious bars and restaurants.Crown's proposal boasts a rooftop the size of The Gabba, public gardens, infinity pools and a suspended waterfall from its pedestrian bridge. The Echo plan would feature a "signature addition" to the Brisbane skyline - an arc-shaped sky deck perched above a high-end hotel and ballroom.Echo had the advantage of not needing an additional casino licence because it would relocate its existing Treasury Casino, chairman John O'Neill said. The old site would be turned into a department store. Both proponents on Monday responded to union accusations linking Hong Kong businessman Stanley Ho - who has been banned from a similar development in Sydney - to the Echo consortium."Let's be very clear - we are not in business with Stanley Ho," Echo's chief executive Matt Bekier said. The company was providing 50 per cent of the capital, while a 25 per cent partner, Hong Kong's Chow Tai Fook, had a business relationship with Dr Ho.The government will finalise the assessment process by mid-2015.

Pakistan military kills 67 militants

PAKISTANI jets and ground forces have killed 67 militants near the Afghan border, days after a Taliban school massacre.

THE killing 148 people - most of them children - at a school in Pakistan's northwest earlier this week stunned the country and brought cries for retribution.

The military has since struck targets in the Khyber tribal region and approved the death penalty for six convicted terrorists. It says its ground forces killed 10 militants late on Thursday, while jets killed another 17, including an Uzbek commander.Another 32 alleged terrorists were killed by security forces in an ambush in Tirah valley in Khyber on Friday as they headed toward the Afghan border, the military said.Khyber agency is one of two main areas in the northwest where the military has been trying to root out militants in recent months.Khyber borders Peshawar, where the school massacre happened, and militants have traditionally attacked the city before fleeing into the tribal region where police can't chase them. The other area is North Waziristan, where the military launched a massive operation in June.In the southern province of Baluchistan, Pakistani security forces killed a senior Pakistani Taliban leader along with seven of his associates in three separate pre-dawn raids, said a tribal police officer, Ali Ahmed. The news comes after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday announced that he would lift a moratorium on executions in terrorism-related cases.Meanwhile, a Pakistani prosecutor said the government will try to cancel the bail granted to the main suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks - a decision that outraged neighbouring India.

Bodies returned to siege victims' families

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 18 Desember 2014 | 22.34

HE says he is making it up as he goes along but grieving father Ken Johnson has emerged as an unlikely galvanising figure following the Sydney siege.

THE proud dad of slain shop manager Tori Johnson praised the nation's spirit and tolerance after returning to the growing mass of flowers at the Martin Place tribute site for the second day.

Mr Johnson met and spoke warmly with religious and community leaders on Thursday night."I think Australia is trying to pave a way for tolerance," he said in a nod to unstable gunman Man Haron Monis' attempts to link his attack with the Islamic State."We get on and that is what we want and we want to keep that flow going."I want solidarity," he told the Nine Network. He now has the heart rending task of organising a funeral before Christmas after Tori's body and that of mother of three Katrina Dawson, who was also killed in the siege, were returned to their families on Thursday evening.Authorities expect to complete examinations on Monis by Friday. While Mr Johnson tried to take on the role of healer, anger still burned for many as Prime Minister Tony Abbott admitted the deaths could have been prevented if authorities had been better prepared. The siege had been "a horrific wake-up call" said Mr Abbott, who has announced a review into why the self-styled Islam cleric was not under greater official scrutiny."This was an atrocity - it may well have been a preventable atrocity, and that's why this swift and thorough review is so important," Mr Abbott said.Monis was on bail over a raft of violent charges, including being an accessory to the murder of his former wife, when he took 17 people hostage on Monday morning. The 50-year-old had been on an ASIO watch-list in 2008 when he sent offensive letters to the families of dead Australian soldiers, but dropped off the list."Just like about everyone else from the premier down, I was incredulous and exasperated at this," Mr Abbott said."It was extraordinary he was on our streets."Senator David Leyonhjelm earlier on Thursday called for gun laws to be watered down, saying the siege wouldn't have happened if the hostages could have had concealed weapons."That nut case who held them all hostage wouldn't have known that they were armed and bad guys don't like to be shot back at," Senator Leyonhjelm told ABC radio."To turn an entire population into a nation of victims is just unforgivable."But former prime minister John Howard remains certain the laws he enacted after the Port Arthur massacre had made Australia safer."It's just an exercise in logic to understand that the more guns there are in the community, the greater the likelihood of mass murder," he told ABC radio.Senator Leyonhjelm quit the Liberal Party in disgust at the 1996 laws and has also been a member of the Shooters Party. With thousands pouring into Martin Place to pay their respects, the growing sea of flowers continued to take over the tribute site and forced the NSW government to ask for advice from overseas."The NSW government is in contact with authorities in London and Boston regarding flowers, tribute notes and condolence books to ensure we are operating on prior international best practice," NSW Premier Mike Baird said. The grass outside London's Kensington Palace was buried beneath flowers following Princess Diana's death in 1997.

Abbott, Baird launch Sydney siege review

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 17 Desember 2014 | 22.34

Tony Abbott says he wants quick answers from a review into the deadly Sydney cafe siege. Source: AAP

TONY Abbott says he wants quick answers from a review into the Sydney cafe siege.

THE head of the prime minister's department and NSW Premier Mike Baird's most senior public servant will examine how Iranian refugee Man Haron Monis was granted citizenship and came to the attention of police and spy agencies.

Mr Abbott also said he wanted to know how a man with a history of violence had a gun licence.Court documents from 2011 reveal Monis had a gun licence while working as a security officer but it had expired, but NSW Police say there's no record of him having held a firearms licence.Monis, who had been on bail as an alleged accessory to murder, and two hostages died at the end of the Lindt cafe siege early Tuesday morning. He had also been on an ASIO watch list in 2008 when he sent offensive letters to the families of dead Australian soldiers, but dropped off the list."We do need to have the answers as quickly as possible so that any lessons can be put into place as quickly as possible," Mr Abbott said.Immigration laws will also be reviewed to remove any doubts about gaps in security checks, he said.Mr Abbott all but confirmed Iran had previously sought Monis for extradition over fraud charges."I share the exasperation of the Australian public at what appears to be someone who has been having a lend of us at the very least for so many years," he said.A committee examining new data retention laws - the third round of counter-terrorism measures proposed by the Abbott government - held a minute's silence before taking evidence from security officials.ASIO deputy director-general Kerri Hartland said her agency was working with NSW and federal police to investigate the siege. She said terrorist attacks against Australia were not hypothetical."Australia is a terrorist target and recent events have once again demonstrated that Australia is not immune from acts of terror," Ms Hartland said.Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin said requiring telcos to keep two years of customer data was essential to fighting terrorism. He said accessing data had already prevented two major terrorist attacks in recent years, but police feared the emergence of small internet providers that dumped their data after only months would have grave implications for disrupting crime.Former attorney-general Philip Ruddock questioned why the new laws exempted internet cafes."It would be just another place for people to say, 'I can go there and nobody can monitor my movements'," he told the committee. The committee heard small providers were kept out of the laws because of the compliance cost.Another Liberal member, Senator David Fawcett, suggested the laws be amended to limit data access to only government agencies.Labor members of the committee said the government had not released figures on how much it would cost the industry and what public money would be used to compensate companies.Attorney-General George Brandis has promised to cover the "reasonable costs" of the industry.

Sydney siege triggers security review

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 16 Desember 2014 | 22.34

Tony Abbott will urgently review how a lone gunman known to authorities was able to take hostages. Source: AAP

TONY Abbott will urgently review how a lone gunman known to federal police and ASIO was able to take hostages in a Sydney cafe.

SELF-PROCLAIMED cleric Man Haron Monis and two of his hostages died at the end of a 16-hour siege in Sydney's CBD, in the Lindt cafe before dawn on Tuesday.

Monis was bailed last year in NSW on an accessory-to-murder charge and was also facing a series of indecent and sexual assault charges. He had also threatened the families of dead Australian soldiers and publicly challenged Mr Abbott to a debate over the merits of the Afghanistan war.The prime minister said the national security committee of cabinet was seeking answers to questions on the minds of all Australians, as the tragedy echoed around the world."How can someone who has had such a long and chequered history not be on the appropriate watch lists and how can someone like that be entirely at large in the community?" Mr Abbott told reporters in Sydney."These are questions that we need to look at carefully and calmly and methodically, to learn the right lessons, and to act upon them."Mr Abbott said agencies and the government had been responding effectively since terrorists began threatening acts of random violence against Australians. But had the "sick and disturbed" individual behind the siege been on a watchlist it was still possible the incident could have occurred."The level of control that would be necessary to prevent people from going about their daily life, would be very, very high indeed."Government MPs have questioned why Monis was not already in jail.Liberal MP Alex Hawke wrote on Twitter: "We must also ask our judicial system why a known criminal who hated our country was not in prison."Mr Abbott and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten laid flowers at a makeshift memorial in Martin Place on Tuesday.Mr Shorten joined the prime minister in expressing the heartfelt condolences of the nation."There is still a lot to learn about why this happened and indeed what happened. We need to also learn how we can ensure that this doesn't happen again," he said.Australia's intelligence partners have been working with agencies such as ASIO to get a more detailed picture of how the incident occurred."It's a reminder, albeit on the other side of the world but a country very close to all our hearts, of the threat we face from Islamist extremist terror," British PM David Cameron said.Former FBI counter-terrorism analyst Matthew Levitt said it appeared to be more a case of "lone offender violence" than an act of terrorism.Despite Monis being known to authorities it would not have been possible to keep tabs on him."Outside of the movies, in the real world no law enforcement agency, not locals, not AFP, not FBI, has the resources to track everybody who's of any interest whatsoever 24/7," Mr Levitt said.ASIO and AFP officials will appear at a parliamentary inquiry in Canberra on Wednesday to discuss the third tranche of anti-terrorism laws, dealing with mandatory data retention.

Bolivia cracks down on overweight soldiers

Bolivia's military and police have begun making a count of overweight members in their ranks. Source: AAP

BOLIVIA'S military and police have begun making a count of overweight members in the ranks after President Evo Morales complained that too many soldiers and cops are out of shape.

MILITARY sources quoted La Razon newspaper said the census will be compiled using data from promotion exams and that the plan aims to help overweight officers and soldiers get fit.

Defence Minister Ruben Saavedra said earlier this week that overweight members of the armed forces will not be allowed to don military uniforms until they shape up."They must be prepared both on the intellectual and the physical level," he said.Bolivia's national police announced similar steps. On December 2, Morales suggested that soldiers and officers who neglect their physical fitness should not be promoted, insisting that staying in good shape is a "responsibility" for members of the security forces.Among its goals, Morales said, the army should aim to nurture athletes capable of representing Bolivia in international competitions.

MOUSE, blood and chicken flavoured popsicles were on the menu at Perth Zoo to keep the dingoes cool with the city's first hot day of summer.

FEMALE Mirri and male Daku munched on the ice blocks dished out by their dedicated carers Stephen Catwell and Kristy Eriksen as the temperature reached 35C.

The frozen food helps keep them hydrated, but is also a novelty and gets the dingoes thinking about the best way to eat it."Curiosity is important for any creature," a spokeswoman said."As part of our environmental enrichment program, we constantly provide different opportunities for the animals such as food puzzles, introducing different scents or faeces and branches from other exhibits to arouse their interest."With a burst of warm weather, we just added a summer spin to it."She said creating food ice blocks for pets at home was a good idea during summer heat. Not to be outdone, Perth Zoo's bull Asian Elephant Putra Mas enjoyed a splash in his pool and a wallow in cool mud.He turns 25 on Monday and visitors are encouraged to join in his birthday celebrations at 10am when he will be gifted a frozen bran cake studded with fruity treats.

Pell finds million off Vatican's books

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 05 Desember 2014 | 22.34

Cardinal Pell, the Vatican's economy tsar has said he wants the Holy See to be boringly successful. Source: AAP

THE Vatican has found hundreds of millions of euros during an overhaul of the system aimed at transforming the once-murky institution into a paradigm of transparency.

"WE have discovered that the (Vatican's financial) situation is much healthier than it seemed," the pope's economy czar, Australian cardinal George Pell, told Britain's Catholic Herald.

"Some hundreds of millions of euros were tucked away in particular sectional accounts and did not appear on the balance sheet," he said in an essay published on Thursday which set out to explain how the papal bank, dogged by accusations of corruption, is cleaning up its act.Pell, picked by Pope Francis to head up the Secretariat for the Economy and oversee the reforms, spoke frankly about the Vatican's former practice of secrecy and allegations of money laundering which dogged the bank for decades. The bank was the main shareholder of the Banco Ambrosiano, which collapsed in 1982 amid accusations of ties to the Mafia, while its chairman Roberto Calvi - dubbed "God's Banker" - was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London in a suspected murder by mobsters. He also spoke of the "almost unanimous consensus among the cardinals" during the conclave which elected Francis last year that the bank needed to be brought into line with international standards. The reforms are now "well under way and already past the point where it would be possible to return to the 'bad old days'. Much remains to be done but the primary structural reforms are in place," he said. The cardinal, 73, said the changes were "designed to make all Vatican financial agencies boringly successful."He also admitted the Vatican was "not broke", saying it was "paying its way, while possessing substantial assets and investments".After a campaign to weed out suspect accounts at the bank, he said the Vatican was guarded against criminal infiltrations and was determined to invest donations "efficiently and honestly".The centuries-old institution was perceived by some as "an old noble family sliding towards bankruptcy... incompetent, extravagant and easy pickings for thieves. Already this misapprehension is dissolving," he said.

'Number spoofing' scam hits UK consumers

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 29 Oktober 2014 | 22.34

BRITISH consumers are increasingly being targeted by a "number spoofing" scam in which criminal gangs fool telephones into displaying the numbers of legitimate organisations.

THE con works by fraudsters cloning the telephone number of a trusted organisation such as a bank and then making that number appear on the victim's caller ID display, according to Financial Fraud Action UK, the name under which the financial services industry co-ordinates its fraud prevention efforts.

They do this using technology, often employed by call centres, which can copy any number even if the one they are calling from is entirely different. The criminal will gain the victim's trust by drawing their attention to the number, claiming it is proof of their identity, before trying to defraud them.Banks have reported an increase in the scam, which is a new variation on telephone frauds where criminals cold-call people and pose as bank staff, police officers or other trusted organisations to persuade their victim to part with financial and personal details.Often, criminals pretend they are phoning to tell the victim that a fraud has been detected on their bank account.Once they have their victim's confidence, they will try to elicit information such as the victim's PIN details, online passwords or other sensitive information which will then be used to steal from their bank account. Some criminals will also trick victims into sending money to other accounts or to hand over cash or cards to a courier for "safe-keeping", whereas in reality the courier is delivering the card straight to the fraudster. The anti-fraud body's intelligence unit, the Financial Fraud Bureau, has seen evidence that the scam has become increasingly common in recent weeks, with organised criminal gangs making use of it.It warns people never to assume that someone is who they say they are just because their number matches that of an organisation. If someone tries to draw a consumer's attention to the number on their caller ID display, the consumer should immediately treat this as a warning sign of a scam.A bank or the police would never call someone and ask for their four-digit PIN, full online banking passwords or ask them to transfer or withdraw money or to hand their card over to a courier.

Pope decries 'unimaginable' Middle East

Written By Unknown on Senin, 20 Oktober 2014 | 22.34

APPEALING for the protection of Christians in the Middle East, Pope Francis said it was "unimaginable" that they could be driven out of the region after 2000 years.

"WE cannot be resigned to imagining a Middle East without Christians," Francis said on Monday at a special meeting of cardinals, known as the consistory.

While the number of Christians has been dwindling throughout the Middle East, recently there has been an exodus of the minority community from Iraq and Syria following the steady advance of the Islamic State extremist group."The latest developments, especially in Iraq and Syria, are very worrying," Francis said. "We are looking at a terrorist phenomenon of previously unimaginable dimensions."He described it as an "unjust situation" that requires not only constant prayers, but also an adequate response from the international community.Earlier this month, an Iraqi Christian politician spoke at the Italian parliament in Rome of the fate of non-Muslim minorities in Iraq."Yezidis have faced genocide, while Christians have faced ethnic cleansing," Hadaya Anwar, a member of the provincial council of Niniveh, in northern Iraq, told a press conference.Anwar said that 120,000 to 130,000 Iraqi Christians have fled to Kurdish areas not controlled by the Islamic State since early August. In addition, some 30,000 have left the country, he said."Us Christians in Iraq have always been the victims of attacks, it's not news, it has been happening for 1400 years," Anwar said. "But today we are the target of the most ferocious aggression that we have seen in the history of Mesopotamia."Francis is expected to return to the issue of Christian minorities in the Middle East when he visits Turkey in late November.

Julie Bishop says expanding the role of commandos in Iraq beyond advice and assistance is unlikely. Source: AAP

EXPANDING the role of Australia's special forces in Iraq beyond advice and assistance is unlikely, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

AUSTRALIAN commandos have been cleared to provide such support to Iraqi troops on the ground fighting Islamic State militants.

But in the wake of Australian Super Hornets stepping up the nation's involvement with the bombing of targets, Ms Bishop said she didn't expect the SAS would actively engage in the conflict."For some weeks, our special forces have been pre-deployed and are ready to advise and assist Iraqi defence forces to enable them to have the capability to combat ISIL and other terrorist organisations," she told reporters in Perth."I have an expectation that our special forces will be required to take that role at some point."We haven't been asked to provide anything beyond advising and assisting, and I don't envisage the involvement of special forces going beyond that."Our mission is essentially humanitarian: there have been concerns about genocide, about mass executions, killings, beheadings, crucifixions ... so Australia is prepared to play a proportionate role within a coalition of other countries."

Kenyan president fronts ICC in Netherlands

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 08 Oktober 2014 | 22.34

KENYA'S Uhuru Kenyatta has become the first sitting president to appear before the International Criminal Court, where he has been charged with crimes against humanity.

KENYATTA, who handed power to his deputy before flying to The Hague, was summoned to answer questions about his floundering trial for allegedly masterminding deadly post-election violence in 2007-2008.

Wearing a charcoal suit and blue tie, a relaxed-looking Kenyatta spoke with his lawyer before the start of the status conference on Wednesday.ICC chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, who has alleged witness intimidation and that Nairobi is withholding evidence, was also present. Many Kenyatta supporters and Kenyan MPs were in the packed public gallery, with some frustrated at not being allowed access.Judge Kuniko Ozaki told Kenyatta that he was present "solely in your capacity as an accused individual"."You may speak only in your capacity as an accused and may not make statements either of a political nature or in your official capacity," as president, Ozaki said.Kenyatta's lawyer Stephen Kay said however that his client would not address the court."I will be answering questions on his (Kenyatta's) behalf and he does not choose to make a statement today," Kay said. The repeatedly-delayed case has seen at least seven prosecution witnesses drop out, allegedly through bribes and intimidation.Judges could decide to send the case to trial or to abandon it after the prosecution said it did not have enough evidence, although a decision is not expected on Wednesday.A handful of demonstrators sang and danced outside the ICC ahead of Kenyatta's arrival, many of them dressed in Kenyan colours. One large banner read: "Hands off our prez, he is innocent"."We had to come today because of course he is innocent, he never participated in any killings," said Paul Kobia from Nairobi, 46.Kenyatta, 52, faces five counts at the ICC over his alleged role in orchestrating unrest in 2007 and 2008 that left 1200 people dead and 600,000 displaced. The Kenyan leader has appeared at the ICC before, but not since he was elected president in March 2013.Kenyatta arrived in The Hague on Tuesday, having temporarily handed power to his deputy and erstwhile political opponent William Ruto.Ruto is already on trial at the ICC for his part in the violence, while Kenyatta's trial has yet to begin despite a drawn-out three-and-a-half year legal saga.Bensouda last month asked for an indefinite postponement, saying Nairobi had refused to cooperate with a request for financial and other statements so she did not have enough evidence for a trial.Prosecutor Ben Gumpert said on Wednesday that since being elected, Kenyatta had "an exceptional constitutional duty to make sure that these obstructions do not take place".The prosecution hopes the documents will shed light on Kenyatta's alleged involvement in the violence that brought one of east Africa's most stable countries to the brink of civil war. They want Kenyatta's bank statements, tax records and telephone records relating to the period of unrest. They believe that the documents could prove Kenyatta's part in bankrolling and orchestrating the violence.Bitter memories are still fresh from 2007, when elections escalated into ethnic conflict, for which Kenyatta and Ruto were charged with crimes against humanity. Both reject the charges. The African Union had previously called for the ICC cases to be withdrawn and transferred to Kenyan courts, accusing the ICC of targeting Africans.Kenya's post-electoral unrest shattered the east African country's image as a beacon of regional stability. What began as political riots quickly turned into ethnic killings of Kenyatta's Kikuyu tribe, who in return launched reprisal attacks, plunging Kenya into its worst wave of unrest since independence in 1963.

Blake and Sam get engaged on Bachelor

IT'S Sam, one hundred per cent?

BLAKE and Sam got engaged on the final episode of The Bachelor but speculation is rife they may have already split because Network Ten is not making either of them, or dumped Lisa for that matter, available for interviews on Friday.

Has Blake had an affair with that steamy Jessica?Maybe Diana kidnapped him and locked him in a Disney fairytale castle?Did Laurina launch a dirty street pie attack on Blake and he is recovering in hospital?Or perhaps Blake and Sam have signed a lucrative "exclusive" deal with a gossip magazine to tell their story of true love?Whatever the case may be, Blake told Sam he had love for lots of ladies on the reality television show but he was only in love with her."You have a way of reading me, you have a way of looking at me and it's that way that you do look at me that makes me feel so loved," Blake told Sam."I've felt a lot of love on this journey but I've only been in love with one person and Sam that person is you.""One hundred per cent," she replied."I love you so much, so much"Yep, we get the picture.

Search for missing NSW boy continues

AS the search for missing three-year-old NSW boy William Tyrell nears the end of the third day authorities and volunteers are beginning to worry about his fate.

"AS time goes on, obviously the survival diminishes," Superintendent Paul Fehon told Network Ten.

"After three days looking for a young person, I think it's fair to say we would have liked to have located something at this stage."William went missing from the front yard of the home of a relative, believed to be his grandmother, at Kendall, on the mid-north coast, on Friday morning. The area where police, SES, members of the Rural Fire Service, local surf lifesaving club and several hundred community volunteers are looking for William was expanded on Sunday.Authorities have been combing bushland for the past few days and on Saturday evening police divers began searching surrounding dams for the boy, who was last seen wearing a Spider-Man costume. The search will continue throughout Sunday night, following what local police inspector Kim Fehon described as a "critical day," given William had likely gone without food and water for several days."I have briefed all the search teams that they are looking for a small boy who is likely to be curled up and may be covered and have found somewhere to hide," she told Fairfax."At this time we are hoping he is still in a position to respond to being called out to."Jenny Atkins, a senior instructor at the Camden Haven Pony Club who's joined the search, said the volunteer's mood was "pretty down" and "worried"."We've had riders going out helping on horse back looking through the thick scrub," she told AAP."It's rough country, they come back with leeches," she said.Since the search began the close-knit community has rallied around William's grandmother, Ms Atkins said."Everyone's feeling for her," she said."Our community does support each other, we're very rural."William has been described as being of Caucasian appearance, with dark hair and hazel eyes.A police spokeswoman said there weren't any plans to wind the search back.

PM in Arnhem Land after Mideast deployment

Tony Abbott's trip to Arnhem Land will go on as military personnel are deployed to the Middle East. Source: AAP

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott came to Arnhem Land to give his undivided attention to indigenous Australians but that may no longer be feasible.

MR Abbott boarded his plane to Nhulunbuy minutes after announcing the deployment of troops to Iraq as part of a multi-national effort to combat Islamic State.

About 600 troops will be deployed, initially in a humanitarian capacity which could develop into a combat mission. The announcement came after Australia received a specific request from the US government to contribute forces to the region. But it wasn't going to stop Mr Abbott making good on his pre-election promise to spend a week in indigenous communities."It is important that the government carry on as usual despite the grave decision we have made this morning," he told reporters in Darwin on Sunday. However, the deployment is likely to redirect some of his attention away from indigenous issues like constitutional recognition and native land leases.Mr Abbott will stay in close contact with Canberra officials about the deployment while in Arnhem Land and will have access to secure communications to do so.Some personnel could be deployed this week.A tent compound on the outskirts of Nhulunbuy will become Mr Abbott's base for six days, as he and his ministers take government functions to the top end.The campsite is on Yolngu ceremonial ground, the same site that hosts the annual Garma Festival, and to where Mr Abbott was invited by Galarrwuy Yunupingu.Mr Abbott shared a cup of tea with Mr Yunupingu shortly after his arrival and ahead of a dinner with the indigenous leader on Sunday night. The prime minister was earlier officially invited into the region with a welcome to country at the Yirrikala Arts Centre along with his parliamentary secretary Alan Tudge and Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion.Mr Abbott has spent time in various indigenous communities, working as a teachers aid and truancy helper, and has pledged to spend one week every year in indigenous communities for the remainder of his public life. This time he will participate in conservation work with rangers on a remote island, meet school attendance officers and visit local businesses. The prime minster will fly out of north east Arnhem Land on Friday, days before heading to New York where further measures to fight IS will be on the agenda.

Canada to send military advisers to Iraq

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 05 September 2014 | 22.34

CANADA is sending dozens of military advisers to Iraq as part of an effort to bolster Iraqi forces against Islamic militants.

PRIME Minister Stephen Harper said on Friday they will join the US in advising Iraq on how to enable security forces in the northern part of the country to be more effective against the threat posed by the group that calls itself the Islamic State.

Harper, in a statement from the NATO summit in Wales, said the group was a real threat to regional security and to the people of Iraq."Left unchecked, ISIL is also a direct threat to Canada and its Allies," Harper said, using one of the acronyms for the group."The deployment of members of the Canadian Armed Forces is a concrete measure to deter the murderous rampage of ISIL and respond to the humanitarian crisis it has caused."Canada's initial deployment will be for a period of up to 30 days and will be reassessed after that time.US Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes tweeted the "US welcomes PM Harper's announcement that Canada will send military advisers to Iraq as part of our effort to support Kurdish forces."Canada's contribution is in addition to the two Canadian military cargo planes that are ferrying weapons to Kurdish fighters.Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird visited the front lines in Iraq this week. The Harper government said opposition leaders in Canada are being briefed on this decision.Canada's former Liberal government refused a request to send troops when the US invaded Iraq in 2003, straining ties between the two neighbours. Canada then stepped up its mission in Afghanistan as part of an effort to repair ties with Washington.

Kiev signs truce with pro-Russian rebels

THE Ukrainian president has declared a ceasefire to end nearly five months of fighting in the nation's east after his representatives reached a deal with the Russian-backed rebels at peace talks.

PRESIDENT Petro Poroshenko said he ordered government forces to stop hostilities at 1500 GMT on Friday (0100 AEST Saturday) following a protocol signed by representatives of Ukraine, Russia, the rebels and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

"I count on this agreement, including the ceasing of fire and the freeing of hostages, to be precisely observed," Poroshenko said in a statement.Heidi Tagliavini of the OSCE told reporters the deal reached at talks in the Belarusian capital of Minsk consisted of 12 points but she did not immediately spell them out before heading back into the talks."The ceasefire will allow us to save not only civilians' lives, but also the lives of the people who took up arms in order to defend their land and ideals," said Alexander Zakharchenko, the rebel leader from the Donetsk region. But Igor Plotnitsky, the insurgent leader for the Luhansk region, told reporters "this doesn't mean that our course for secession is over" - a statement that reflected deep divisions which threaten to derail peace efforts.Since mid-April, Moscow-backed separatists have been fighting government troops in eastern Ukraine in a conflict the UN estimates has killed nearly 2600 people.A NATO military officer told The Associated Press on Thursday that the ranks of Russian soldiers directly involved in the conflict have grown. But as late as Friday morning, Associated Press reporters heard heavy shelling north and east of the key southeastern port of Mariupol. The city of 500,000 lies on the Sea of Azov, between Russia to the east and the Crimean Peninsula to the west, which Russia annexed in March. The shelling appeared to indicate that rebels had partially surrounded the area and were probing its defences. The seizure of Mariupol would give the rebels a strong foothold on the Sea of Azov and raise the threat that they carve out a land corridor between Russia and Crimea. If that happens, Ukraine would lose another huge chunk of its coast and access to the rich hydrocarbon resources the Sea of Azov is believed to hold.Ukraine ready lost about half its coastline, several major ports and untold billions in Black Sea mineral rights with Russia's annexation of Crimea. The rebel offensive in the southeast follows two weeks of gains that have turned the tide of the war against Ukrainian forces, who until recently had appeared close to crushing the five-month rebellion.Ukraine, NATO and the West say the rebel counterattack has been spearheaded by regular Russian army units, a charge the Kremlin has denied.Colonel Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine's national security council in Kiev, said seven servicemen had been killed over the past day, bringing the Ukrainian forces' death toll to 846.

Pyne accused of sidelining students

STUDENTS are concerned the federal government is sidelining them from discussions about higher education.

THEY are upset the government has stopped involving them in advisory bodies, including one that rewards outstanding university teaching.

The Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) says its traditional involvement in the Office of Teaching and Learning awards, and another advisory committee, was ended this year with no explanation. The National Union of Students has also found itself no longer welcome.CAPA president Meghan Hopper says she was told the government is reviewing positions on the awards panel. The other committee student representatives were involved in was replaced with a new body they were not asked to join.Ms Hopper says it seems Education Minister Christopher Pyne did not want to hear from students in any format."He keeps arguing that students shouldn't be protesting the higher education budget cuts but then he won't give us any other method of communicating with him," she said.Mr Pyne has been contacted for comment.

HSU boss Williamson's foul tirade on tape

FORMER Health Services Union supremo Michael Williamson used a foul-mouthed tirade to accuse another official of treachery as he sought to retain control of the union he defrauded of millions of dollars.

A TAPPED phone call between Mr Williamson - who was jailed in March for five years - and current HSU secretary Gerard Hayes was played on Tuesday to the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption.

In an expletive-laden blast, Mr Williamson accused Mr Hayes of "f***ing treachery" for not warning him the federal government was about to appoint administrators to the scandal-ridden union."Well mate, you've just f***ing blown the whole f***ing house up mate," Mr Williamson said in the April 4, 2012, phone call."The whole f***ing house up because of your f***ing paranoia about stuff that's not there."Mr Williamson had stepped aside as national president at the time, pending an investigation into his systemic defrauding of HSU finances.Mr Hayes told the commission on Tuesday that Mr Williamson controlled the organisation even after he had left the top position."He was still in the vicinity and he was still directing things," Mr Hayes said."Was I happy about that? No."In the phone call, Mr Williamson told Mr Hayes it was impossible for the government to appoint administrators to the union and expressed outrage that he and acting general secretary Peter Mylan had not been consulted when the warning about possible administration came the day before. An administrator was appointed to the HSU East branch the following June."I thought we were mates. And you went around and you tried to f*** around Peter and f*** around me," Mr Williamson said.Mr Williamson claimed he had senior barrister Ian Temby QC, who was investigating him on behalf of the union "on the f***ing rack".Three months later Mr Temby's devastating report was leaked and revealed $20 million in questionable payments from the HSU East branch controlled by Mr Williamson, including $5 million paid to companies linked to the union boss. Two other intercepted calls were played at the commission. In one call, Mr Williamson called Mr Hayes on January 27, 2012, and criticises the then-HSU national secretary Kathy Jackson, who helped expose his corruption and is now facing questions about her own use of union finances before the commission."She's gone f***ing troppo," Mr Williamson said about a media release issued by Ms Jackson defying a ban on her speaking about a Fair Work investigation into the union.Outside the commission, Mr Hayes said Mr Williamson had continued to influence the union beyond April 2012."Elvis never left the building," he said. The hearing continues on Wednesday.

Malaysia lays its MH17 dead to rest

The bodies of 20 victims from the MH17 tragedy are on their way back to Malaysia from Amsterdam. Source: AAP

MILLIONS of black-clad Malaysians have fallen silent in tribute to 43 of their fellow citizens killed in the MH17 disaster as the first remains were brought home and laid to rest amid deep sorrow and anger.

PEOPLE across the country of 28 million observed a minute's silence on Friday at 10.55am (1255 AEST), shortly after a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 747 aircraft landed with the remains of 20 people killed when MH17 was blasted from the sky by a suspected surface-to-air missile over Ukraine.

Five weeks after the July 17 tragedy, the coffins and urns were conveyed to white hearses in a solemn ceremony presided over by Malaysia's King Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah and Prime Minister Najib Razak at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.Muslim-majority Malaysia had declared a day of national mourning, with flags at half-mast, and business, sport, entertainment and other events cancelled or toned down.Residents of the capital Kuala Lumpur overwhelmingly donned black, with many Muslim women in flowing black robes and Islamic headscarves, as state television aired recitations from the Koran and photos of the dead."No words can express the sense of loss in seeing the bodies return, my prayers are with the victims and families of #MH17," Najib said on his Twitter feed.Dozens of Malaysia Airlines cabin crew and pilots, wearing their uniforms and holding Malaysian flags and white flowers, held an emotional vigil near the airport ceremony, some weeping, others praying for their lost colleagues.Shazly, 40, a flight steward who gave only his first name, citing a company request regarding contact with the media, mourned for Nur Shazana Mohamed Salleh, 31, who joined the airline with him in the same 2004 recruitment class."She was a very jovial girl. She loved her job very much. She was very close with all her friends," he said."Life has to go on, even though it's very difficult for us to accept what has happened to our airline. They are our friends."Some wore T-shirts bearing their colleagues' names and the Arabic phrase for "See you in Paradise". Fifteen crew were aboard.Friday's remains included Ariza Ghazalee, 46, and her son Muhammad Afif, 18, part of an entire family of six wiped out in the disaster. It was a far different homecoming than what they had planned - the family was repatriating to Malaysia after three years abroad, and Ariza's final Facebook post had said, "Starting our new migration. Praise God."The special flight arrived from Amsterdam, where bodies have been taken for identification by Dutch authorities investigating the tragedy. All 298 on board Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur flight MH17 were killed, including 193 Dutch nationals and 38 Australian nationals and residents. The West accuses Russian-backed separatists of shooting down the plane, while Moscow blames Ukraine. The remains were conveyed onward to their hometowns for memorials in mosques, churches and temples - reflecting Malaysia's multi-ethnic make-up.Many were quickly laid to rest amid grief and anger."Their loved ones can no longer hold them. Their bodies came back in boxes," an angry Abdul Rahman Nordin, a friend of Nur Shazana's family, said at a funeral for her and MH17 First Officer Ahmad Hakimi Hanapi outside Kuala Lumpur."Justice must be served. If courts find that the plane was shot down intentionally, then those responsible must be punished with the death sentence," he said.MH17 has compounded Malaysian grief over the troubling and still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 just four months earlier. It vanished on March 8 with 239 people aboard after inexplicably deviating from its Kuala Lumpur-Beijing path.It is believed to have gone down in the Indian Ocean but no trace has been found and the cause remains unknown. With tears welling in her eyes, a former Malaysia Airlines flight attendant who declined to give her name said MH17 was "different from MH370 - at least now we have them back home.""(Justice) is the only hope we have now - that justice is done, for all airlines," she said at a separate funeral outside the capital for her former colleague, flight attendant Dora Shahila Kassim."Justice will prevail one day. That is not up to us."The government says 30 Malaysian MH17 passengers and crew have been identified. Further remains will return in coming days.Malaysia's active social media saw an outpouring of sorrow, with many users expressing hope that Friday's homecoming could help bring closure for both disasters."Welcome home #MH17, and please come back to us #MH370," read one posting.

Drunk passenger strapped to seat by crew

A DRUNK air passenger was tied down by cabin crew after he allegedly tried to bite other passengers and ripped clothing off two crew members on a flight from Melbourne to New Delhi, a news report says.

THE pilot of the Air India flight first requested a diversion to Singapore to offload the unruly Indian man, the Times of India reported on Friday.

When it became clear the diversion would take several hours, cabin crew tied the suspect to his seat using ropes and wires, the report said.He was handed over to security after arrival in the Indian capital."Indian carriers have witnessed scores of such acts either by inebriated passengers or other perfectly fine people who suddenly acted strange," a senior pilot told the newspaper, saying such unruly flyers posed a risk.It was fine to punish them strictly back on the ground, but "the critical issue is keeping them in check when the plane is in air," he said.Another pilot questioned Indian airlines' leniency with drinks."Foreign airlines are very strict," he said."Try asking for a third or fourth drink on any western airline and the crew will firmly warn that you will be reported on arrival if you ask for more."
